Rives Junction is situated in the northern part of Jackson County, bordering the Ingham County line. Rives Township was likely named after John C. Rives, who was a prominent political force during the time of Andrew Jackson.

Adjoining Tompkins Township was named after former New York Governor Daniel B. Tompkins, as was Tompkins County, N.Y., from where many of the area's early settlers came. Descendants of many of those pioneers still live in the area.

Two cement markers designate where the principal Meridian line intersects the Base Line in Michigan. These two lines form the basis for all surveying done in the state.
