AWARE, Jackson YMCA Partner on Self Defense Course

FEB. 28, 2018 - Self-defense is a countermeasure that involves defending oneself from harm, and includes strategies for awareness, assertiveness, and verbal resistance. Self-defense can also be empowering and facilitate healing for survivors of violent crimes, such as domestic violence and sexual assault.

Instructors from Mason Martial Arts certified through the American Taekwondo Association will provide instruction for the four-week course scheduled to begin on March 2, 2018 from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The course is free to YMCA members.

"Self-defense training is also a form of mindfulness training that can empower individuals through offering techniques for analyzing situations and promoting assertive behavior," says Angelita Velasco Gunn, AWARE, Inc. executive director. "The instructors from Mason Martial Arts are not only skilled in self-defense but are also sensitive to survivors of trauma," says Gunn.

Instructors will provide participants tools for:

  • Staying calm under pressure
  • Assessing situations for appropriate level of danger
  • Assessing risks to fighting back
  • Using assertive voice and body language
  • Escaping simple scenarios
  • Using striking techniques for defense
  • Gaining confidence through real acquired abilities
