Expanding the Hospital’s Entrance and Lobby to Improve Patient Experience

Henry Ford Allegiance Health (HFAH) plans to expand the front entrance of the hospital to enhance way-finding so that patients, families and visitors can more easily navigate its expanding hospital structure, including its new West Tower of private patient rooms. This renovation will also include a more welcoming environment in the lobby area.

“This is really about ensuring our patients have the best experience we can possibly provide. From the moment patients approach the hospital, we want them to feel welcome by creating a calm, healing environment that reflects the high quality of care and service we offer. One way to achieve this is to create an entrance with an inviting look and atmosphere,” said Henry Ford Allegiance Health Integration Advisor Karen Chaprnka. “Most importantly, we want to make it as easy as possible for patients and customers to find their way to the services they need. With simpler way-finding, lots of natural light and comfortable surroundings, we hope patients will feel more relaxed before even reaching their destinations.”

Highlights of this project include:

  • An open, two-story atrium to allow for natural light.
  • A three lane drop-off and pick-up area with a transparent outdoor cover.
  • Improved way-finding, including a walkway wrapping around the outside wall of the hospital to guide guests.
  • Common Grounds coffee shop will be expanded to better serve and welcome customers.
  • The Lobby Gift Shop and the Outpatient Pharmacy will be located next to each other for greater convenience.
  • A centralized desk to assist visitors and patients.
  • Enhanced security features to improve safety.
  • Improved climate control.

This renovation  is expected to begin in the spring of 2019 pending final approvals and will take approximately 18 months to complete. The project follows the completion of the hospital’s new all-private-room patient tower, which had its grand opening in August with a community celebration.

“The updates to the hospital’s entrance will also knit together our current and brand new patient towers, and allow for expanded space for our cardiovascular services on the first floor,” said HFAH President and CEO Georgia Fojtasek. “We are making these important renovations with our patients in mind, and based on the input of our customers, staff and physicians, so that we can be sure we are meeting their needs.”
