JSO installs air scrubbers to improve air quality for eventual return of music fans

JACKSON – Indoor air quality is always important. But during the current COVID-19 pandemic it has turned into a top priority for many, the Jackson Symphony Orchestra included.

The Jackson Symphony Orchestra recently had a pair of air scrubbers installed in their HVAC system to improve air quality as it prepares for the eventual return of music fans to its building in downtown Jackson. As air flows through ductwork, an air scrubber produces negative ions that capture air pollutants that are too small to be captured by a standard air filter.

“Like basically all indoor music venues, the Jackson Symphony Orchestra has not held any events during the COVID crisis,” said Steve Trosin, the JSO’s Director of Business and Operations. “But we wanted to be proactive and take advantage of some of that downtime to make improvements to our facility, and focusing on air quality was an obvious priority. We want to make the air inside our facility is as clean and safe as it possibly can be as we prepare for the eventual return of music lovers and JSO supporters from in and around Jackson County.”

Air Scrubber by Aerus, the specific brand that was installed, uses ActivePure Technology, which was created in cooperation with NASA to protect the health of the astronauts on board the International Space Station. Lammers Heating & Air Conditioning, 2520 Lansing Avenue, installed the air scrubbers.

“Since mid-March we have seen a growing demand for air scrubbers from both residential and commercial customers around Jackson County,” said Todd Desy, President of Lammers Heating & Air Conditioning. “Air quality is important, and we are excited about the benefits these air scrubbers provide. COVID-19 is relatively new, so the technology has not specifically been tested for it. But this particular air scrubber has proven in past testing to be more than 90 percent effective against other RNA viruses, which include the bird flu, swine flu, SARS and Ebola.”

Those air scrubbers are certain to make the air cleaner and safer inside the JSO building, which hosts about 15,000 people each year.

“We appreciate working with local contractors and community partners like Todd Desy and his team at Lammers,” Trosin said. “They’re incredibly responsive, professional and easy to work with.”
