LESS THAN A MONTH TO SUBMIT:LOCAL HISTORY SCHOLARSHIP 2025

JACKSON COUNTY — The Jackson County Michigan Historical Society (JCMHS) is excited to announce its Local History Scholarship 2025 essay contest for graduating high school seniors across Jackson County. With less than a month left before the October 3, 2025 deadline, students are encouraged to seize this opportunity to showcase their research and writing skills while deepening their knowledge of our community’s past.

The scholarship contest invites seniors in the Class of 2026 to submit essays exploring the people, places, and events that have shaped Jackson County. Students may choose their own subject of interest or select from suggested topics such as the Underground Railroad in Jackson County, Civil War training grounds, the rise of local theaters, or the impact of the railroad industry.

Three winning students will each be awarded a $1,000 scholarship. Their essays will also be recognized at the JCMHS Annual Banquet on November 13, 2025, at the historic Jackson Masonic Temple.

Must submit:
A one-page personal statement on why history matters.
A 700+ word essay on a Jackson County historical subject.
